Apartment shopping can be a fun and exciting time. Finding the right apartment might be a tough task, but with a bit of work you can find something you just might enjoy living in for a few years. This palace of love just might even be something you are proud to slap insure with your renters insurance. Here are just a few things to get you on your way to that renters insurance paradise you call home.
Make a list and check it twice
Time to make a list of the items you want in your apartment. These items should include things like closeness to mass transit, shopping, school districts, activities, how much you can easily afford, and complex amenities you desire.
Armed with the list of power you can easily narrow down your apartment search. You don’t want to shop twenty places you have no interest in renting. Save yourself some time and narrow down that search. This way you spend more time doing the things you like!
Inspect that love pad
You have narrowed down your place of residence. Don’t just walk into that leasing office and sign on the dotted line. Ending up with a lemon will make you dread putting renters insurance on it. It is your duty to inspect your new place before you sign that contract of death.
You don’t just want to walk in and look at the freshly painted walls. You have some work to do here. The first thing you want to check is the location. Make sure you are ok with the lighting and safety of you and others. You don’t want to be making renters insurance claims the first week due to theft.
You might end up with a unit by the road. Are you ok with this place? Light sleepers might not be ok with living by a busy road. This is also something to consider if you like to sit on the balcony/porch.
You want to check the water pressure. Check that water pressure in more than just the sinks. Horrible water pressure in the shower could really hamper those early morning wake up shower.
Check the water producing fixtures while you do your water pressure check. Make sure the porcelain throne is stable and adequately secured. Make sure that you won’t be getter a shower from the kitchen sink than the actual shower.
Check the lights by turning them all off and on. Turn on the heat and air conditioning. It maybe the dead of summer, but you want to help reduce the possibility of turning on the heat that first frigid morning to find it does not work.
Last up is the visual part of your inspection. Check the ceiling for water damage. Most importantly, you need to check all exterior doors. You want to make sure the locks are secure and lock the door securely into place. Making it harder for people to get in only helps keep your renters insurance agent at bay.
Moving into a new place is often an exciting and fun time. Choosing your new apartment complex is not the last step before you sign that mile long lease. You have a right to inspect your new apartment before you sign anything. Do this one step and you will end up with a place you are happy to put renters insurance on.
