How to Find the Right Apartment

Even if you don’t live in a densely-populated urban area, finding the right apartment at the right price can be a challenge these days. With more and more folks seeing their homes foreclosed, renting is growing in popularity again. Couple that with people who are tired of owing more on their home than what it’s worth, and you’ve got to fight pretty hard to find and get into the right apartment.

Fortunately, it’s not impossible. In fact, if you are smart about it and do the legwork ahead of time, you can find the right apartment and one that fits your budget. Here’s the roadmap you need to follow in order to find the right place:

  1. Figure out your housing budget. Make sure you include incidental expenses like utilities as well as renters insurance.
  2. Figure out your wants and needs. Make a list of features you’d like an apartment to have. This can include things like covered parking, laundry facilities, acceptance of pets, distance to public transportation or your place of employment, as well as a number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Decide which of these things you must have, and which ones you’d like to have.
  3. Narrow down the neighborhood. Figure out neighborhoods that have the kinds of amenities you’re looking for, as well as their proximity to work. If you have kids, check into what kinds of schools each neighborhood has to offer.
  4. Start collecting data. Clip out newspaper ads, and spend some time looking for an apartment online. Keep everything in a file. Once you’ve gathered some possibilities, call around to get more information.
  5. Visit some apartments. When you go to visit, take a trip around the neighborhood to make sure it’s what you expected. As far as the apartment itself, make sure to do a thorough inspection.
  6. Narrow your list. Pick two or three different apartments you’d consider moving into. Don’t just jump into the first apartment you look at.
  7. Make your applications. Next, it’s time to fill out your renters application. Each apartment complex or landlord will have a different one, so this can be a bit time consuming. Apply to the apartments you’re interested in.
  8. Make your final decision. Once you’ve been approved at a couple of apartments, go through the amenities and advantages for each. Make a final decision, and get ready to move into your new apartment!
