Just because you rent doesn’t mean you don’t have stuff. In fact, for perennial renters, you may find yourself in a situation where all of your stuff doesn’t even fit in your apartment. Maybe you’re keeping some of your stuff at your folks’ place, or maybe you’ve rented a storage unit to store your stuff.
You don’t want to (and shouldn’t have to) throw your stuff out, either. Unlike homeowners, though, it’s not like you can plot a sign in the yard that says “garage sale” and get rid of a bunch of the stuff you don’t want.
There’s eBay, of course, but that’s a pain in the butt. There’s all the packing, and shipping, and listing fees and all of the rest of the mess that goes along with it.
The good news is that you don’t need to have a garage to have a garage sale. Here are some tips if you’re going to sell your old stuff from your apartment:
- If possible, reduce traffic into your actual home. You may be able to put some of the items from your sale onto the front lawn, or the breezeway. Check, of course, with your apartment manager or landlord before you do this.
- If you do need to have the garage sale inside of your actual apartment, make sure you protect your belongings. Consider moving your expensive electronics equipment into a locked bedroom. Shut and lock the door to every room that isn’t being used for the sale, and only use the rooms you need. Make sure your renters insurance is current, too, in case something winds up broken or missing.
- Some apartment complexes organize regular garage sales, as well. In this kind of garage sale, you bring your things to a centralized location – typically a clubhouse or a parking lot. Visitors or other residents then come to see what everyone is selling.
- You might also consider community garage sales. Community garage sales are a great way for you to unload all of that stuff. The downside, of course, is that you have to transport your stuff to the community garage sale location. That can be problematic, especially if you have a large volume of things you’re trying to sell.
