More and more individuals are choosing to get a private health insurance policy for many reasons including having: access to a higher quality of medical care and treatment; more choices for specialists and physicians that they could see in the event that they get sick; and coverage for their accommodations if they choose to stay in private and more comfortable hospitals or medical facilities for a required medical treatment or procedure. Prior to purchasing a policy, however, you need to first understand how private health coverage works.
Private health insurance policies can cover hospital bills, specialist and physician fees and diagnostic tests and procedures that you may need in the event that you get ill. The type and amount of coverage, however, can vary from one policy type to another and from one insurance provider to the next. There are some policies which come with comprehensive coverage and those which come with limited coverage. There are also those which can only cover critical illnesses. Because of this, it is extremely important for you to first assess the amount of coverage you need to make sure that the policy you would be getting would not just offer adequate coverage but that you would also not end up paying for more coverage than what you actually need.
There are some cases when your pre-existing conditions may be covered by a policy, especially if it uses moratorium underwriting. In moratorium underwriting, although your pre-existing conditions might not be covered at the start of your policy, you may eventually get coverage for them after a certain period of time that is stated on the terms of the policy. Additionally, you can also get coverage for a previous condition you have had, provided that you have had it five years or more before you applied for a policy and that it has already been declared as cured.
Keep in mind, however, that there are some conditions and illnesses that you may never be covered for. These may include chronic conditions or illnesses, cosmetic procedures, HIV/AIDS treatment and management and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. This is why you need to make sure that as you go through the policies you are considering, you would be doing enough research on what private health insurance plans do not cover. You can do this through asking each of the insurance providers you are considering to get the policy from or by getting the information from the websites of the insurance providers.
